IEM Sarawak's 2-Day Seminar Takes Off After Being Officiated by JKR Director

Bintulu, Sept 3 -- IEM Sarawak's 2-Day Seminar on "Prestressing and Stay-Cable Innovation, and Bridge-related Technologies" in Bintulu, Sarawak was today officiated by Director of Public Works Department Sarawak, Ir. Ts. Gs. Br. Dr. Cassidy anak Morris.


His speech was read by JKR Sarawak's Deputy Director (Assets Management), Ir. Ts. Chang Kueh Chin, who officiated the seminar. Chang said that he hopes the two-day seminar will "an engineering enrichment event to enhance the knowledge of the engineers."

Ir. Jonathan Law, a representative from IEM Sarawak, in his opening speech, welcomed the delegates from various government agencies and the private sector.

Specialist Engineering Asia (SEA) managing director, Eugene Lim kicked off the seminar by giving a brief introduction to the concept of pre-stressing and the company's collaboration with OVM China.

SEA project director, Ts. Aaron Chew, in his

presentation, shared about some of the challenges faced by SEA doing post-tensioning and pre-stressing jobs.


OVM Malaysia Managing Director, Michael Guo said that last year alone, a total of 46,000 bridges were built in China.


"OVM China alone has constructed over 2,300 stay cable bridges and this experience is invaluable for our overseas job," he said.


In Sarawak, he added, there are already five stay-cable bridges built. The final stages Bintulu-Jepak bridge will be completed by end of this month.

Guo went on to elaborate that some of the common issues faced in bridge cable systems include:


  • Water-related Hazards

  • HDPE Sheath Deterioration

  • Embedded Pipe Problems


Guo presented the PowerPoint in English on behalf of OVM China chief engineer, Dou Yongzhi. During the Questions & Answers session, Dou explained that regular maintenance and monitoring of the structure integrity provides safety for the users of the bridges built in China.

OVM China Engineer Yan Yunyou represented Dr. Zou Yiqing to explain the key technologies involved in the development of OVM's multi-strand cable system.


Dr. Zou Yiqing of OVM China also presented his topic, "Bridge Cable System Maintenance Technology and Structural Active Reinforcement Technology."


The delegates will be given a tour of the site of the Bintulu-Jepak bridge on Wednesday September 4.
