The Bintulu-Jepak Bridge, a strategic initiative by the Sarawak government, is set to benefit approximately 150,000 local residents. This iconic structure will also serve as a catalyst for investment in Tanjung Kidurong and the Samalaju Industrial Park.
The bridge spans 3.5 kilometers, featuring a cable-stayed design over Kuala Kemena and an adjacent flyover at the Jalan Tun Ahmad Zaidi/Jalan Tun Razak traffic light junction.
Crossing the Kemena River, the bridge itself measures 267.6 meters, while the cable-stayed portion extends 494.2 meters. The total length, including roads and viaducts, reaches 788.84 meters.
The project, with a total cost of RM466.7 million, commenced in 2019. It is a joint venture between Cahya Mata Sarawak Bhd’s unit, PPES Works (Sarawak) Sdn. Bhd. (PPESW), and China Communications Construction Company (CCCC) Ltd. Completion is expected this year.
SEA, the local partner of OVM China, provided expertise in constructing the stay-cable bridge. OVM China, a leading contractor in China, is renowned for its pre-stressing solutions in major infrastructure projects.
Officially launched in 2019, the project was delayed because of the Movement Control Order (MCO) during the Covid-19 pandemic. The project is expected to be completed this year.
Upon completion, the bridge will reduce the distance between Bintulu Airport and Bintulu Town by 6.4 kilometers. The current route spans 20.9 kilometers, passing through underdeveloped areas.
This bridge provides a strategic link between the Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE) Growth Nodes, including Samalaju Industrial Park, Matadeng Industrial Park, and Mukah Smart City.
With Bintulu Town as the gateway for investors heading to Samalaju Industrial Park, this bridge will spur economic growth in the Jepak area and enhance investment opportunities in Tanjung Kidurong and Samalaju Industrial Park. Additionally, it will elevate the socio-economic status of Bintulu’s residents.
