Iconic Bintulu-Jepak Bridge one of SEA's most prestigious projects in 2024

SPECIALIST Engineering Asia (SEA) is honoured to contribute to the iconic Bintulu-Jepak bridge project, a key infrastructure connecting Jepak with the township of Bintulu in Sarawak.

This RM466.7 million bridge is strategically located in the heart of Bintulu, enhancing the town's iconic status. Visible from the air as planes land at Bintulu Airport, the bridge spans 267.6 meters across the Kemena River.

Construction began in 2019 and includes a permanent cable-stayed bridge of 494.2 meters, with a total estimated length of 788.84 meters, encompassing roads and viaducts.

The construction, undertaken by a joint-venture between Cahya Mata Sarawak Bhd’s unit PPES Works (Sarawak) Sdn. Bhd. (PPESW) and China Communications Construction Company (CCCC) Ltd, is nearing completion this year.

SEA is the local partner of OVM China, the stay-cable specialist for the project. OVM China is the leading specialist contractor in China, renowned for providing pre-stressing solutions for various infrastructure projects.

"This is one of the most prestigious projects which we have participated, showcasing our capability to be involved in major project initiatives led by OVM in Malaysia," said SEA’s Chief Executive Officer, Eugene Lim. "We are pleased to contribute to Sarawak’s infrastructure development, which we believe will continue to grow at an accelerated pace in coming years."

Lim acknowledged the encouraging support from the consultant Engineer of the project, Konsortium Malaysia and the Sarawak Public Works Department (JKR) throughout the project's implementation which, without their support the project would not have progressed so smoothly.

According to SEA co-founder, Aaron Chew, the bridge significantly reduces travel time by 70 percent.

"Previously, locals had to travel 22km from Bintulu Airport to Bintulu town, but now the distance is significantly shortened to 6.4km,” Chew said. “The bridge will greatly boost the local economy once open to the public.”
